The Customer’s Challenge – Measure Engine Supercharger Power Consumption

Interface was asked by a customer to help measure a super charger’s  power consumption; the power required at the crankshaft to spin a supercharger installed on a petrol engine.

Any sensor used had to be able to withstand the large radial forces imparted by the supercharger’s drive belt as well as the vibration forces from the engine

The Solution

A Interface T22 Pulley torque transducer   was installed on the engine crankshaft to measure the power needed to turn the supercharger drive belt.

9850 digital indicator was also used in conjunction with the T22 to collect and display data from the transducer

The Result

The customer was able to accurately measure the power consumed by the supercharger, using the data to complete a efficiency analysis. They were also able make adjustments to optimize efficiency of the supercharger

How it Works

  • A Custom pulley is manufactured to replace the existing crank pulley. The custom unit had a thru-hole and bolt pattern to mount the T22 torque transducer flange
  • The T22 was then installed in place of a normal pulley
  • The T22 measures the torque required to spin the supercharger, with data fed to the 9850 digital display
  • Data collected is used by the customer to complete their efficiency budget analysis.
  • Adjustments can now be made to optimize supercharger efficiency
